A. By visiting the Monuments and Buildings Record in Hill St. Belfast or accessing the database on this web site.

Q. What information do I need if I am conducting an environmental impact study?
A. You must call into the Monuments and Buildings Record (MBR) in Hill Street where you will consult site maps for the NISMR, Industrial Heritage Record (IHR) and the Statutory List of Historic Buildings in Northern Ireland. Depending on the size of the scheme concerned it may be preferable to make an appointment to use the MBR, to ensure that the various resources are available on the day.

Q. What maps do you have available?
A. We hold copies of the 1st, 2nd , some of the 3rd and 4th Edition County Series Ordnance Survey maps. We also hold copies of the Irish Grid Ordnance Survey maps. These all cover the Northern Ireland area only.

Q. Can I visit all your monuments

A. Only State Care Monuments are open to the public, all other monuments are in private ownership and permission must be sought from the landowner before visiting.

Q.How are sites and monuments protected in Northern Ireland?
A. 181 are in State Care,1560 are Scheduled, all others are protected by Planning and Agriculture policies.
