Jordan's Castle

This fine preserved tower-house was built for a 15th century merchant in Ardglass, County Down. Ardglass was an important port and town in the Anglo-Norman Earldom of Ulster and an impressive group of tower-houses are features of its townscape. Jordan's Castle is the best-preserved example. It was bought by the antiquarian Francis Joseph Bigger in 1911, who restored and furnished it. Thankfully he bequeathed it to the state in 1926 so that visitors can enjoy it today.
There are remains of other castles and historic buildings close to Jordan's Castle. The substantial remains of Margaret's Castle and Cowd Castle are nearby. The Newark, remains of a row of merchant's stores is also close by but is in private ownership. King's Castle near St Nicholas' Parish Church appears to be a 19th-century rebuilding on the site of a medieval tower-house.
